STEDELIJK X CAMIEL FORTGENS
The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and fashion label Camiel Fortgenspresent a limited-edition T-shirt whose design takes shape within the industrial production process and only comes to life once the buyer takes the scissors to it. Known for embracing imperfection through crooked seams, unfinished edges, and visible constructions, the label brings this sensibility to a collaboration that resonates with the Stedelijk’s focus on artists and designers who challenge conventions and offer new perspectives on the world. From this shared mindset emerged a simple but radical question: how can the familiar T-shirt be redefined?
CUT TO WEAR T-SHIRT
The CUT TO WEART-shirt explores what happens when design is dictated entirely by industrial production, turning the usual process on its head by letting the human hand appear only at the very end. The double-layered textile features embroidered contour lines that define its shape. Left untouched, it remains a flat object; once cut open, it becomes a garment. With scissors in hand, each wearer determines the final form, where industrial precision meets human craftsmanship, revealing the construction of a garment — a process usually hidden behind the façade of a flawless, ready-made product.
PROCESS
Instead of being manually cut and stitched, the T-shirt is embroidered directly onto the fabric roll. The fabric is folded, placed in the embroidery machine, and stitched with all its outlines. A digital logo print and neck label print is then applied, after which the roll is cut into squares and packaged, ready for you to complete.
CUT TO WEAR MANUAL
This T-shirt is not ready-to-wear; it needs your hand to be finishedto turn it into a wearable piece. Cut along the embroidered lines precisely, or take a freer, imperfect, irregularapproach. Each version becomes a unique collaboration between industrial production and your own hand.
